The insider scoop on beaches along the Creston Valley Kootenay Lake Route

Kootenay Lake Beach

During the summer months, nothing beats a dip in the cooling waters of Kootenay Lake and sunbathing on the beach. There are several stunning public beaches to choose from. These beaches are free to the public with no parking or entrance fees.

The Kuskanook Rest Area and Boat Launch offers the closest fully serviced access to Kootenay Lake from Creston. It's more than just a boat launch as there is a beautiful beach on the south side well worth visiting.

Twin Bays has a beautiful beach with easy access for drop-off. Its fine sandy beach makes it the most popular beach on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake. Parking is available down the road and at the parking lot there is a bathroom and garbage pickup.

Mackie Beach Park is a wonderful example of community collaboration. There is parking at the entrance with bathrooms, and garbage and picnic tables are located closer to the coarse sand beach. A donation is requested to help with the upkeep of the site.

Lockhart Beach is located 40 km north of Creston on Highway 3A. Connected to the Lockhart Creek Provincial Park and campground, this sand and fine gravel beach offers visitors a place to relax and enjoy the clear waters of Kootenay Lake. There is capacity for 12 vehicles in the day-use parking lot and pit toilets and picnic tables are located near the beach.

Crawford Bay Beach is a lovely, uncrowded beach area within Crawford Bay. This end of the Bay boasts the warmest water on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, and has a wide open south-facing beach that gets long days of sunshine! Access is just off the south side of Highway 3A after the Crawford Creek bridge, along a dirt road that follows the creek. There are currently no services or amenities here.

Riondel Campground and Park Beach is privately owned by Tech Cominco and run by the Riondel Campground Society. They have granted public access to this site which features camping facilities, bathrooms, garbage pickup, covered picnic area and a beautiful beach with fabulous views of the lake and mountains.
