Local Food & Wine Aficionado Itinerary
Begin your day by heading over to Fly in the Fibre or Lark Coffee Roasters for a delicious specialty coffee. If it’s a Saturday, head over to the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market (CVFM)to experience a unique community of growers, artisans, craftspeople, and entertainment. The CVFM operates the market weekly, May through December. January to April a monthly market approach is taken to coincide with the Creston Valley harvest season. Enjoy the exciting benefits of eating fresh, eating real, and shopping local in the heart of the Kootenay year round!
Be sure to stop in at the Skimmerhorn Winery and Vineyard for lunch. This small-batch winery in Creston, BC, also operates an on-site vineyard and bistro. Skimmerhorn Bistro is a seasonal restaurant, with a focus on farm-to-
table meals. Ingredients are sourced directly from local farms, gardens, and ranches which reflects a commitment to sustainability in the local economy.
In the afternoon visit Wloka Farms Fruit Stand, which opens in July when the produce is ready for harvest and continues on into December. Of the goods sold by Wlonka, 98% is produced locally – grown on land within a 5km radius of the fruit stand.
For a down-to-earth homemade dinner try the Real Food Café, where imaginative food is served in a comfy, casual atmosphere. Meals are produced with locally-sourced produce, meat and cheese, and seasonal specials.
Grab a late breakfast and enjoy the outdoor patio at Break in Time Café located in downtown Creston, where they offer a variety of breakfast items, all from locally-sourced ingredients.
After breakfast take a leisurely drive out to Kootenay Meadows, a certified organic grass-based dairy farm. All of the products available at the Meadows are made with milk exclusively from the farm. Fresh, glass bottled pasteurized
milk and cream, and flavourful, complex, handcrafted raw milk cheese are available onsite.
Take a tour of Baillie-Gorham Winery, a boutique craft winery that produces small lots of premium wine. Sample vineyard wines in the tasting room or sit on the patio and enjoy with a
splendid cheese tray.
Following this, visit family-operated Flamenco Farms, located in the community of Erickson, with a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and berries found seasonally and fresh farm eggs year round. The U-Pick cherry orchard is a perfect place for a family outing and tasting.
Enjoy a casual dinner at Casey’s Community House. This family restaurant features a wine bar and tap house and serves amazing locally grown food and wine in a newly renovated historic building in downtown Creston.
As you continue on your journey up Kootenay Lake, pop in at the Retro Café located in Creston, BC for homemade crèpes and jams. 4 miles north of Wynndel, BC, just above Duck Lake you’ll find Wynnwood Estate Cellars, who create distinctive wines that reflect the terroir of this unique site in the Upper Columbia Basin. Come by the winery’s tasting room for a tasting and tour from mid-May to mid-October.
Enjoy lunch at the fully licensed Black Salt Café in Crawford Bay. This colourful restaurant features fresh soups, salads, paninis & burgers on the daytime menu.
For dinner head over to Broccolino Restaurant, a Swiss-Italian fine dining restaurant with a seasonally inspired menu and all made fresh from scratch. Situated in Kootenay Bay and close to the free ferry.
